Aspergers trending… urgh

I’m not going to talk specifically about Greta, but I see Aspergers is trending on all social media. This is a worry, as some unqualified people think it is acceptable to armchair undiagnose people they’ve never even met.

Asperger’s Syndrome is just autism. It is a specific profile of autism, associated with autistic people who don’t have delayed speech, learning difficulties, nor intellectual impairments. Some of us consider ourselves disabled, and that’s our prerogative. Many of us have medical issues which are part and parcel of autism, and many have co-occurring visible or invisible physical or mental health conditions.

I am positive about my autism, but you don’t get the silver linings without the clouds.

We are people, valued members of society, schools, workplaces… and don’t deserve to be belittled and psychoanalysed by strangers on the Internet.

P.S. I am having a little chuckle at the thought that there could be families out there whose surname is Asperger, that are sadly lacking in autism, completely off the spectrum, utterly neurotypical 🤣
